What do you mean you don’t get it?

Online social groups are just as awkward to diplomatically manage as real life social groups. The things you say to one set of friends don’t translate the same way to another set of friends, even if the overall group sense of humor is very similar. This is a universal law.

Usually this isn’t a problem for me. I tend to blend rather well and can interact with all kinds of people comfortably, both online and face-to-face. But sometimes I run into a situation where one group of people is so much like another group that I start treating them the same…and am usually met with responses of “Ooooookay…” or worse, silence. So my prior enthusiasm and joviality die and I back off a bit until I get going and do it all over again.

Vicious. Cycle.
